yorusalem major sium"My name is Yorusalem Major Sium. I'm a second year dental student. I began working at the Ethio-Canadian Cultural Academy, Inc., in the summer of 2020 and this year. My school counsellor first told me about this organisation while I was in grade 10 of high school. I worked at ECCAI as a Tigrinya language teacher and assistant.
Working here has taught me many things, including how to be patient, flexible, understanding, and to manage my time. Working with these immigrant children showed me that while moving to a new nation halfway around the world is difficult, learning a new language and culture is far harder.
To be a role model for these children, teaching them the value of always remembering where you came from, culture, language, and giving back to their community, while also teaching them about Canadian culture and traditions.
Seeing these kids learn something new and knowing that I was a part of their growth is extremely empowering and will make me feel very proud. I am extremely grateful and pleased to have had this opportunity."
